Happy Birthday Keith Barnes

Oct 30, 2014 | By Tigers

It’s a big day for one special Tiger, with our greatest ever Keith Barnes celebrating his 80th birthday.

Over a long and distinguished career, Barnes played 200 grade games for Balmain and captained his club, state and country. He represented Balmain in three grand finals (1956, 1964 and 1966), including twice as captain. Barnes also spent a large number of years as an administrator at Balmain, including roles as Chief Executive and Chairman.

He was named fullback and captain of the Balmain Tigers ‘Team of the Century’, before the newly refurbished Keith Barnes Stand was named in his honour at Leichhardt Oval in 2009.

From everyone at the Tigers, happy birthday Golden Boots!

Still my number 1 idol from my league watching days back then. How times have changed.!
He may not go down as the greatest fullback ever, however, he was a great leader at both club and test level. His goalkicking, to my mind, is still unsurpassed. His final attempt, in his final game at Leichhardt oval on a windy day didn’t look overly pretty, but to the delight of all, it sailed through the posts.
Most importantly he was a great sportsman. I know of no cleaner or fairer player ever to lace on a boot.
Hope you’re enjoying life in retirement Keith.

Fondest regards,
David
