Tigers World Cup Stars

Oct 13, 2017 | By Tigers

Congratulations to the massive amount of Balmain Tigers & Wests Tigers players selected in Rugby League World Cup squads this week.

With the tournament kicking off on October 27th, all of the competing nations have now finalised their squads. We’re proud to say there are 13 players across the various nations from either Balmain Junior League clubs or the Balmain Tigers Junior Representative program. There are also an additional three who have represented Balmain in NSW Cup or Jersey Flegg competitions.

Departing Wests Tigers captain Aaron Woods leads the group, selected for defending champions Australia. He will be looking to add to his 9 Tests for Australia, having missed the ANZAC Test earlier in the year with injury.

Leichhardt Wanderers and Enfield Federals junior Robbie Farah will captain Lebanon, having been a member of the Kangaroos successful 2013 squad. Farah has played 1 Test for Lebanon back in 2002 as an 18 year old, scoring a try in a 36-6 win over France. He is joined in the Lebanese squad by fellow Tigers juniors Mitchell Moses, Adam Doueihi, Andrew Kazzi and Jaleel Seve Derbas.

The Fijian squad also has a heavy Balmain junior influence, with Junior Roqica, Eloni Vunakece and Kane Evans all selected.  All three represented Fiji in the 2013 Rugby League World Cup, reaching the Semi Finals. Nathan Brown, Nathan Milone and Dean Parata have all been selected in the Italian squad, with Brown and Milone set to make their international debuts in the tournament.

Finally, Holy Cross junior David Marando will compete in his second World Cup for the United States of America. Marando made his American debut way back in 2007, in a World Cup qualifier and played alongside Robbie Farah in Balmain’s Junior Representative teams.

Former Balmain Premier League player Chris Heighington (England) and Jersey Flegg players Sam Moa (Tonga) and Rod Griffin (Papua New Guinea) have all been selected to play, alongside Wests Tigers stars Elijah Taylor (New Zealand), Kevin Naiqama (Fiji – captain), Alex Twal (Lebanon), Tui Lolohea (Tonga) and James Tedesco (Italy).

Congratulations to all of the players selected from Balmain Tigers and Wests Tigers.

Don’t miss the Balmain Tigers celebration of the Rugby League World Cup – World of Tigers – at Doltone House on Monday, November 30th. A host of Tigers internationals, led by English star Gareth Ellis, will be in attendance as we celebrate Balmain’s involvement with the Rugby League World Cup.
