Tigers are still Burning Bright

The start of the 1910 season - Balmain against South Sydney at Birchgrove Oval

On Easter Monday 20th April 1908 at Birchgrove Oval, the "Tigers" began a proud tradition. In the Club's first Rugby League match, wearing the distinctive 'black and gold' colours in horizontal stripes, they met Western Suburbs and won, 24-0.

The proud tradition of the Tigers has been built upon the talents and the determination of great sides and champion players. Achievements have been many. Tigers have won 11 glorious premierships and, along the way given the game some of the greatest players in Rugby League, the likes of 'Pony' Halloway, 'Chook' Fraser. 'Whip' Latta, 'Golden Boots' Keith Barnes and 'Junior' Wayne Pearce just to name a few.

Great moments came early - premierships in all three grades in 1915 and 1916, a performance never to be duplicated in the modern era, the unforgettable 1969 Grand Final victory over Souths and the unlucky 1988 and 1989 defeats.

Tigers have survived the changing face of Rugby League over the Super League battles, and decided in July of 1999 to form a joint venture with Western Suburbs to ensure the Tigers' remained in the competition. A name change in the NRL resulted - Wests Tigers, and so the mighty Tigers live on.
